Kind of a weird postâ€¦.

It all started when I noticed that my Math 447 professor uses the phrases "modulus" and "abosolute value of" interchangably.

Then yesterday when I was doing some research for my presentation on Hensel's Lemma for this class, I ran into an article that mentioned how the discovery of p-adic number fields and p-adic analysis was motivated *by thinking of absolute value in a different way*.

I am wondering if anybody knows what the article meant by this? Or exactly what the connection is (if there really is one) between modular arithmetic and the concept of absolute value? Let me know what your thoughts are! Thanks.
